“YOU HAVE A charming home, Sharon.” Olivia had enjoyed the brief tour of the downstairs Sharon had given of the hundred-year-old farmhouse. “You’ve done a great job with the updates.”

Sonny sat in a brown antique wingback chair in the living room, head tilted back, eyes closed, breathing deeply. Nash Blackwell, the horse trainer, was out on the back patio. He sat in a wicker chair facing the tree line and the river, talking on his phone. Rhett and Tad were outside with Jazzy and the horse.

“It’s beginning to feel like my home now that the remodel is mostly finished.” Sharon led Olivia into the kitchen, where they sat at a round oak table. The kitchen cabinets were white Shaker. The backsplash white subway tile. The real color was Sharon. She wore a blue-flowered maternity blouse and loose navy trousers, and radiated an energy that was captivating. “I convinced Tad that we needed windows in here. There’s no sense living within sight of the Mississippi if you don’t take advantage of every view.”

Olivia followed the direction of her gaze. “You have your own dock.” A large wooden one with a speedboat tied up at the end.

“Tad runs his hang-gliding business from here. You can’t quite spot it, but we have a little office next to the dock and a picnic area, too. Our goal was to designate areas for clients versus family.”

Rhett should probably be hearing this. “Sounds like you guys are thinking ahead.”

“And keeping busy.” Sharon picked up a glass of water, gold and diamond wedding set sparkling on her finger. “It’s a rush now to establish the business before the baby comes. And try to figure out this junior rodeo piece for Jazzy.”

Marriage. Babies. Olivia felt envious. What was happening to her? While she sorted out her feelings, she kept the conversation rolling. “How long have you been married?”

“Since last winter. I’m due this Christmas.” Sharon glowed, dark eyes shining with happiness.

Olivia was reminded of Rhett and how sometimes, for the briefest of moments, she felt as if he was all she needed.

“Life is so different out here,” Sharon continued. “And time passes quickly when you’re in love.”

“You aren’t from around here?”

Sharon turned in her chair, extending one leg so that Olivia could see her bright red sneakers. “No. I’m not a cowgirl. Jazzy and I were driving to visit my uncle last winter. There was a huge, unexpected snowstorm that stranded us out on the highway. If Tad hadn’t come along... Well, we might have run out of gas and...” She heaved a satisfied sigh. “I used to fly supply planes for the Air Force, most recently out of Texas. Moving here has been a huge adjustment.”

“You gave up flying for love?” She’d given up a career, no less.

“Not exactly.” Sharon’s smile didn’t dim. “I’d already retired and had accepted a job flying for an airline out of Dallas.”

“You must love hang-gliding.” Olivia glanced toward the dock, taking in more details. The speedboat had what looked like a trailer on the back and on top of the trailer was a hang-glider.
